The Kalusugan Coalition is excited to announce Project SEAAT (Southeast Asians Against Tobacco), a project funded by the Asian Pacific Partners for or Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL). APPEAL is a national network of organizations and individuals working towards social justice and a tobacco-free Asian Pacific Islander community.
In an effort to increase visibility, and ultimately parity, among tobacco control advocacy in New York City, KC and the Vietnamese Community Health Initiative (VCHI) are partnering to form Project SEAAT. The goal of the project is to train community leaders to advocate for more research, policy direction, and funding for Southeast Asian communities in New York City with regards to tobacco control.
Though studies have shown that Southeast Asian men living in the United States smoke at greater percent than the general population, there is still very little resources directed towards Southeast Asian communities with respect to language access for cessation programs. Project SEAAT plans to be the first step in training tomorrow's leaders to address the specific tobacco control needs of Filipinos and Vietnamese living in NYC.
Kalusugan Coalition's inspiration for the logo is the Narra Tree. It is one of the national symbols of the Philippines. Read more about it here.
