Asian Pacific Islanders (APIs) make up 12% of all NYC residents. The numbers grew at a faster rate than those of any other racial or ethnic group, yet health education and services for them are woefully lacking. This is especially true in the case of HIV - where a combination of cultural taboos/stigma, language and cultural barriers, and neglect from social service and health care providers work together to make access to HIV prevention information and services for APIs exceedingly difficult.
To address these issues the Asian & Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS (APICHA) developed the Breaking Silence Coalition, a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funded project. Breaking the Silence Coalition seeks to raise awareness about HIV, to change social norms that prohibit discussion of HIV and HIV-related issues, to increase access to HIV information and services for API communities in New York.
KC has been invited to be part of Breaking the Silence Coalition and will work closely with APICHA in developing HIV/AIDS educational and testing opportunities targeting the Filipino American community.
Kalusugan Coalition's inspiration for the logo is the Narra Tree. It is one of the national symbols of the Philippines. Read more about it here.
